The grey francolin (Ortygornis pondicerianus) is a species of francolin found in the plains and drier parts of the Indian subcontinent and Iran. This species was formerly also called the grey partridge, not to be confused with the European grey partridge.

The local name of Grey francolins teetar is based on their calls, a loud and repeated Ka-tee-tar...tee-tar which is usually produced by one or more birds.

It is the state bird of Haryana state, India (locally known as kaala teetar, काला तीतर). Fried black francolin is eaten in Azerbaijani cuisine. [2] There are six recognized subspecies: F. f. melanonotus (Hume, 1888) – eastern India to Sikkim and Bangladesh.
