This Surah has 286 verses and resides between pages 2 to 49 in the Quran. Al-Baqarah (the Cow) has been so named from the story of the Cow occurring in this Surah (67-73). It has not, however, been used as a title to indicate the subject of the Surah.

Though it is a Madani Surah, it follows naturally a Makki Surah Al- Fatihah, which ended with the prayer: "Show us the straight way." It begins with the answer to that prayer, "This is the Book (that)...is guidance..." The greater part of Al-Baqarah was revealed during the first two years of the Holy Prophet's life at Al-Madinah.

And ˹remember˺ when We made the Sacred House 1 a centre and a sanctuary for the people ˹saying˺, “˹You may˺ take the standing-place of Abraham 2 as a site of prayer.” And We entrusted Abraham and Ishmael to purify My House for those who circle it, who meditate in it, and who bow and prostrate themselves ˹in prayer˺.

Indeed, ˹the hills of˺ Ṣafa and Marwah 1 are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes the major or minor pilgrimage to the ˹Sacred˺ House, 2 let them walk between ˹the two hills˺. And whoever does good willingly, Allah is truly Appreciative, All-Knowing.
