I know I am too late to the party but there's so many things I wanted to say after completing season 1..! Jonathan is an absolute Gorgee..! As a character I really feel what he is going through. Reminds me of my past self and how my teenage was spent. I like how he tackling all the issues that he is facing and he is managing everything so well.

The biggest difference between season 1 and 2 was that season 1 referenced the pop culture phenomenons that came before it - the ones that had a direct line to the 80's, hailing from that time. Starting with season 2, the Duffers decided that Stranger Things is enough of a pop culture phenomenon and began referencing its own season one.

Steve the Bystander: Steves first flaw in season1 is his shallowness and lack of understanding for the current situation. it's easy to absolve Steve for( most of) this given how he doesnt know what our main characters know about the upside-down.

In some respects Season 1 was an adult TV show with kids acting in it, the children acting in it were superb . Season 2 is a kids TV show with kids acting in it. Season 1 set an atmosphere of ET meets poltergeist meets the X-Files. In season 2 the tone changed to something more like Degrassi Junior High, (hows that for an 80's reference!).

A gate - a permanent/stable opening, which does not close after a few moments like the portals of the Demogorgon in season 1 or of eleven who sent one to the hellscape. And yeah I know we’re talking about a show with monsters and people with superpowers, but the arcs of the characters in the first season were very emotional and believable l. I just don’t think the Duffers understand what made the first season so great in the first place.
