The oil quench after the steel is cooled down to about 900°F is a much better method for higher carbon content steels. Save the canola oil to use again when re-hardening the blade in HT.

2015年2月19日 · For rapid steel removal, it is darn hard to beat the Pferd 14" chip breaker, from Amazon. All Pferd and Grobet files are top of the line. Simonds is a more affordable file that is WAY better than the new Nicholsons. I buy Pferd and Simonds from Amazon. The problem with new Nicholsons are they are made in Mexico and some in brazil.

Stock removal of course and I am doing most of the work by file. My problem is that I am both unsure about what quenchant to use along with the tempering. Any help is appreciated.

Putting a dot of soft solder on the file in the position you are going to anneal conducts the heat through it better when you apply the red hot copper.

2006年3月12日 · To me, when you 'file' something you're using a metal file to cut other metal. If your tool is abrasive based your not 'filing' anymore. People talk of diamond 'files', but that is really a 'stone' product like any other abrasive bonded to a handle or mandrel.
