The VEGMAP Project is a large collaborative project that was established to classify, map and sample the highly diverse vegetation of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. The book not only mapped the delineations of 440 zonal and azonal vegetation types, but described each of these vegetation types. There have been several attempts to classify the vegetation of South Africa in the last century. For many years the Veld Types described by John Acocks were the used and accepted vegetation units. Acocks travelled very widely throughout South Africa during a 40-year period and sampled some 3300 sites.
Why is the vegetation map important? Used by consultants for EIA’s-highlights threatened ecosystems and species. Vegetation types form the basis of Ecosystem types which inform Threatened Ecosystem types. Vegetation types form one of the foundational layers in the National Biodiversity Assessment (next one 2017). Any suggestions?
