1997 The Somerset House Trust is established to preserve and develop Somerset House for public use. 2000 The River Terrace opens to the public for the first time in more than a century; the Hermitage Rooms and the Gilbert Collection both open; then, in December, Somerset House installs a temporary ice rink for the first time
Somerset House is fully open to the public. Admission to Somerset House is free, but you’ll need to buy a ticket for some exhibitions and events. Part of the Strand outside Somerset House is now a pedestrian/cycle zone.

In 2025, Somerset House celebrates its 25th birthday, marking its extraordinary transformation to one of London’s best loved cultural spaces and home to one of the largest creative communities in the UK.
Somerset House Studios’ bi-annual series Assembly is a multi-day programme of experimental sound, music, and performance. Assembly features new commissions, collaborations, and live premieres, many of which are developed in residence at the Studios.
Set against the backdrop of Somerset House’s iconic 18th century façade and with sweeping views across the Thames, the River Terrace is one of our most exclusive spaces and the perfect central location for a standing reception for up to 500 guests.
