The Spinning Wheel is an enchanted object which, when the spindle is touched, will send its victim (in this case Aurora) into a deep ageless sleep, originally death, which was cast by Maleficent, but was softened by Merryweather.

The Spinning Wheel plays a important role in the classical fairy tale Sleeping Beauty (also known as La Belle au bois dormant ("The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood" in French) by the late Charles Perrault and Little Briar Rose by the Brothers Grimm).

The Spinning Wheel. Part of Aurora’s “fall” into Maleficent’s spell—her finger pricked on the spinning wheel—refers to her approaching maturity or awakening. When Rose dips her foot into the water by the river, for example, she appears to be testing it out, awakening to new, mature knowledge of the world.

Sleeping Beauty (French: La Belle au bois dormant, or The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood [1] [a]; German: Dornröschen, or Little Briar Rose), also titled in English as The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods, is a fairy tale about a princess cursed by an evil fairy to sleep for a hundred years before being awakened by a handsome prince.

In Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent puts a spell on the spinning wheel to lure in aurora so the she pricks herself; In the sequel, Maleficent herself destroys the spindle upon receiving it from Lickspittle, awakening the king from his slumber.

In Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, the spinning wheel becomes fatally dangerous. Maleficent, the villainous fairy, uses it to enact her curse, foretelling that on her 16th birthday, the Princess Aurora would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die.

The Wicked fairy is the antagonist of Sleeping Beauty. In some adaptations, she is known as Carabosse. The most notable adaptation of the character is Maleficent, a Disney villain who appeared in various Disney media, beginning with the 1959 Walt Disney film Sleeping Beauty.
