The Museum, located within the former Texas School Book Depository building, chronicles the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. The main exhibit, John F. Kennedy and the Memory of a Nation, is on the sixth floor.

The sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository was the primary crime scene for the JFK assassination. Visitors will see historic images, news footage, artifacts and original evidentiary areas.

The Museum presents programs, events and special exhibits that allow visitors to explore specific aspects of the history of the Kennedy presidency and assassination, providing deeper engagement with personal stories and experiences, as well as the Museum’s collections.

Finished in 1981, the exterior of the building was restored to its 1901 appearance and the first five floors were used for administrative and government functions. During this time, the top two floors, including the infamous sixth floor, remained empty.

Why is it called The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza? A sniper’s perch and rifle were found on the sixth floor of the building after the assassination of President Kennedy. The Museum’s core exhibit is housed on the sixth floor.

The Museum’s collections comprise a wide-range of materials that help tell the story of the assassination of President Kennedy and its aftermath, as well as explore his life and legacy and the history and culture of Dallas and the 1960s.
