2025年2月18日 · During the American Civil War (1861–1865), the strategically important Valley was the site of two major campaigns and numerous battles and represents, in microcosm, many of the military, social, and cultural factors that ultimately explain why the Union won and the Confederacy lost the war.

The Valley campaigns of 1864 began as operations initiated by Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and resulting battles that took place in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the American Civil War from May to October 1864. Some military historians divide this period into three separate campaigns.

There were 326 armed conflicts in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War, as noted in the National Park Service’s 1992 “Study of Civil War Sites in the Shenandoah Valley.”* The list below includes all of those clashes, and ranges from small skirmishes to the immense struggles at Third Winchester (Opequon) and Cedar Creek.

The Army of the Shenandoah was a field army of the Confederate States Army active during the American Civil War. It was created to defend the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia from Union Army attacks during the early months of the war.
