The EMD SD40 is an American 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and August 1972. 1,268 locomotives were built between 1966 and 1972. In 1972, an improved version with new electronics was developed and marketed as a new locomotive, the SD40-2.

The standard SD40 sold more than 1,200 examples, illustrating the industry's desire for higher horsepower six-axle designs. However, the builder could never have envisioned its "Dash 2" variant - the SD40-2 - would go on to become one of its all-time best sellers.

3086, SD40u, was built by General Motors in September 1966, #A2144, FN C314-12, as CP 5511, Class DRS-30a. It was sold to East Coast Motive Power in 1999 and rebuilt by Alsthom in 2000 as GCFX 3086 and resold as CEFX 3086 in 2008.

There are significant diffences between the SD40u and the SD40-2. The biggest external differences are the frame and trucks.
