Recent studies relate the introduction of Early Neolithic flint mining practices to the migration and rapid expansion of agricultural groups from north-western continental Europe into present-day Britain and southern Scandinavia.

The book presents a classification system for Scandinavian flint for use by archaeologists. Flint types are described and evaluated in terms of knappability, limitations posed by nodule size, and prehistoric availability.

The first two sections are on the geography and flint sources of Southern Scandinavia and North Germany. The third is an introduction to the prehistory and artifacts of the area’s Stone Age up to the advent of the Late Neolithic, or Dagger Period.

The magnificent dagger from Hindsgavl with its blade less than 1 cm thick is the finest example of the flintworkers’ outstanding skills at the end of the Stone Age.
