2024年8月29日 · The vaquita porpoise (Phocoena sinus) is the rarest and most-endangered species of marine mammal in the world. In early 2023, the minimum population size of the vaquita was thought to be about 10-13, based on the results of a vessel survey and acoustic study.

Race to save the vaquita. The vaquita is the most endangered marine mammal on the planet. Countless vaquitas have been drowned in gillnets, which is their biggest single threat. While only a few vaquitas remain, recent monitoring shows there are still mothers and calves in the area.

An international team of experts from around the world embark on an ambitious last-ditch attempt to save the vaquita from extinction. The mission, named VaquitaCPR (CPR for “Conservation, Protection, Recovery”), aims to capture some of the last remaining vaquita and to re-release the animals once their habitat is deemed safe for their return.

What can I do to save the vaquita porpoise? There are some very simple things you can do to support the vaquita conservation effort, ranging from just spreading the word to using your buying power when shopping for seafood.

Today, the NMMF continues its important conservation work using lessons learned from working to save the vaquita porpoise from extinction and applying them to other highly-endangered marine mammals.
