Bonn/Geneva, 12 April 2019 – Range States have agreed on a set of concrete conservation priorities guiding the work under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Concerning the Restoration, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Saiga Antelopes (Saiga spp.) up to 2025.

On a faraway Asian plateau between the Aral and Caspian Seas in a temperate desert shared by Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, these two problems have come to a head, and the locally revered saiga antelope—a cultural symbol comparable to the cherished bald eagle in the United States—is paying the steep price.

The IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group (ASG) is the world’s leading body of scientific and practical expertise on the status and conservation of all antelope species. It is a global network of specialists concerned with the conservation, monitoring, management, and the study of antelopes.

Experts project that the roan antelopes could be extinct by 2025. In Kenya, the antelope would be spotted in the Maasai Mara ecosystem in Narok County and Ithanga Hills in Kiambu County. The species has now settled in Lambwe Valley in Homa Bay County where conservation efforts have confined it to Ruma National Park.
