This article describes the use of the guides, using SSPC-VIS 1 as the example. Step 1 – The first step in using any of the guides is to identify the photographs that most closely depict the initial condition of the steel that will be cleaned.

SSPC's most widely used visual reference features over 50 full-color photos of previously coated and uncoated, rusted steel surfaces before and after dry abrasive blast cleaning.

The current version of SSPC-VIS 1 (2002) depicts seven initial conditions of steel before any abrasive blast cleaning is performed. They include four conditions of uncoated steel:
