The SR 509 Completion Project builds three new miles of SR 509 and completes the unfinished SR 509 in south King County. This new four-lane highway will become an important north-south alternative to the congested I-5 corridor between Seattle and south King County.

State Route 509 (SR 509) is a 35.17-mile-long (56.60 km) state highway in the U.S. state of Washington, connecting Tacoma in Pierce County to Seattle in King County. The highway travels north from Interstate 705 (I-705) in Tacoma to SR 99 south of downtown Seattle.

The SR 509 Completion Project will ultimately extend SR 509 to I-5 in SeaTac. People traveling through the area will have a new southern route to get to Sea-Tac International Airport and be able to bypass I-5, SR 518, and local streets.

Construction of the SR 509 and SR 167 expressways occurs simultaneously in stages through 2028. Tolling will be phased in as the new roads open. SR 509 Expressway: The first mile expected to open between I-5 and 24th Avenue South in SeaTac. This mile will be tolled.

The SR 509, I-5 to 24th Avenue S. – Expressway Project is the first major stage of the SR 509 Completion Project. Construction will begin in 2022 and end in 2025. WSDOT will complete the SR 509 Completion Project with a second stage in 2024 to 2028.

The State Route 509 Completion Project extends SR 509 to Interstate 5 near SeaTac and adds a southern access point just south of Sea-Tac International Airport. The freeway extension will improve service between industrial districts by allowing general-purpose traffic and trucks to bypass I-5, State Route 99 and local streets.

For both the SR 509 and SR 167 Expressway, if a per-axle multiplier is applied, vehicles with 3 or more axles would pay a toll rate that increases based on the number of the vehicle’s axles. Vehicles with 3 or more axles include semi-trucks, vehicles towing a trailer, and large buses.

The Puget Sound Gateway Program combines the SR 509 Completion Project in King County and the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County to complete critical missing links in Washington state's highway and freight network.

The SR 509/24th Avenue South to South 188th Street New Expressway project is the final stage of the SR 509 Completion Project improvements, which connects SR 509 to I-5 in SeaTac.
