The round whitefish (Prosopium cylindraceum) is a freshwater species of fish that is found in North American drainages from Alaska to New England, including the Great Lakes except for Lake Erie, [2] and in Arctic tributaries of northeast Asia, as well as northern Kamchatka Peninsula and the northern coasts of the Sea of Okhotsk. The round whitefish is a medium-sized fish, averaging 8-12 inches in length and occasionally reaching 22 inches. Its body shape is long and tubular with a nearly round midsection (hence its name). Its head is short and its mouth is small and inferior (snout extends beyond lower jaw).

Round whitefish are bottom feeders, preying mainly on benthic invertebrates and fish eggs or newly hatched fry. Although found in deep lakes, they rarely inhabit depths greater than 120 feet.

The round whitefish (menominee), although unfamiliar to many anglers, is native to all the Great Lakes except Lake Erie. Few anglers have caught and eaten menominee, but those who do find them excellent eating. They are primarily a commercial species, similar to lake whitefish but somewhat smaller.

Identification: Round whitefish are noticeably cylindrical in body shape. They are dark brown on the back fading to silvery sides and silvery-white below. Pectoral and pelvic fins are typically light orange in color. Scales are large.

Toward their topside, these scales are a golden brown that fade to a white color that covers their bellies.
