2024年8月20日 · Retired priests are still able to remain sacramental ministers at parishes as “visiting priests.” Additionally, they can offer weekend or weekday Masses, hear confessions, or preside for a baptism, funeral or a wedding.

In recent years the number of retired priests has grown significantly, challenging archdiocesan retirement resources. The CMA assists the priests through contributions to the Priest Retirement Plan.

The usual age of retirement for priests is 70; every priest must submit his resignation on his 75th birthday. In special circumstances, any active archdiocesan priest with an official assignment from the archdiocese and who has reached the age of 65 can request retirement from the archbishop.

All diocesan priests are eligible to receive retirement benefits in accordance with the Priest Retirement Plan. We currently have 86 retired priests and 90 active priests whose average age is 50 years old.
