In 2004, the downtown network of the underground city was re-branded and given the name RÉSO, which is a homophone of the French word réseau, or network. The "O" at the end of the word is the logo of the Montreal Metro. Schematic maps bearing the RÉSO logo are found throughout the network.

It serves as an all-weather transport link for 500,000 people per day beneath the city’s streets.

One of the most noted tourist attractions in Montreal is the Reso underground city. Nowhere else in the world is there an underground city of this size although Toronto's PATH is a close second and actually boasts the largest underground shopping complex in the world.
