Remington New Model Army Revolver, early model with mortised frontsight. The Remington is a single-action, six-shot, percussion revolver produced by E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y., based on the Fordyce Beals patent of September 14, 1858 (Patent 21,478).

The “1858 Remington” is a modern collector’s term for the Remington New Model Army. The Old Model started production in 1861 with the slightly improved New Model Army coming out in 1863.

The 1858 Remington revolver. As its name indicates, the first model of Remington revolver 1858 was born the same year. Before 1857, the American gunsmith could not manufacture a revolver since it was blocked by a patent introduced by Colt. As soon as it was lifted, Remington was able to produce its first model, the Remington Beals revolver.

Rugged and accurate, this six-shooter was a mainstay of the Civil War and the American Frontier during the cap-and-ball era.
