Filtered fluid caught by the glomerular capsule (filtrate) travels through the rest of the tubule to the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), loop of Henle and distal convoluted tubule (DCT), in this order, before exiting the nephron into common collecting ducts shared by many nephrons.

Zooming in on the proximal convoluted tubule, it’s lined by tubule cells which are also known as brush border cells. On one side is the apical surface which faces the tubular lumen and is lined with microvilli. Microvilli are tiny projections that increase the cell’s surface area to help it reabsorb more solutes or water.

Characterized by its simple tall cuboidal epithelium with a brush border of microvilli, the proximal convoluted tubule is the longest part of the renal tubule. This brush border of microvilli increases the surface area on the apical side of the epithelial cells for reabsorption.
