2024年5月3日 · If you go to whole foods, they have prickly pear syrup and jam. I mix that in with lemonade to make a pretty great version. I think Shamrock also has prickly pear flavored syrup in their ginormous aisle of flavored syrups. it goes fast though.

Prickly Pear jam was fairly common when I was a kid in the 70’s but prickly pears were lining the highway so it was free if you had the motivation to go pick it. Then they introduced the “cactoblastis” moths and they really did blast it away. Rare but not unheard of to get the jam now.

I grew up in west Texas in the desert and I have warm memories of my grandfather coming back from hunting trips with bags of prickly pear fruit. 2023年2月12日 · I have made prickly pear jelly as well. I agree with the low sugar pectin and would add that you use citric acid instead of lemon juice as well. My batch has a wonderful flavor but the subtle taste of lemon brings out a tartness in the prickly pear that might be offensive to some. It’s worth a try. The color of this jelly is phenomenal!

2017年10月30日 · Copied and pasted from the album they linked above: I played around with various recipes but pretty much kept a 1 to 1 ratio with the fruit juice/pulp to sugar and about 3 tablespoons of pectin per cup of fruit juice/plup (ex. 3 cups of fruit juice/pulp / 3 cups of sugar / 9 tablespoons of pectin).

To make syrup: Take about 6 prickly pear and cut into chunks, 4 cups water and 2 cups sugar and the juice of 2 lemons in a pot and simmer for 30 mins. Allow to cool and strain thoroughly. Add the syrup and 8 cups water to a picther, about 2 cups sugar, the juice of 2 lemons and slice 3 limes.
