The Andalusian, also known as the Pure Spanish Horse or PRE (pura raza española [1]), is a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula, where its ancestors have lived for thousands of years.

Breeds such as the Lipizzaner, Lusitano, Paso Fino and the Central European Warmbloods all owe their ancestry to the PRE. There are currently about 170,000 PRE horses throughout the whole world, bred in more than 60 countries.

But they can be confused with another similar Spanish breed called the Pura Raza Española (PRE). So what exactly sets these two magical horse breeds apart? Let’s break it down in this blog post.

They have a short back; high-set, arched neck; and rounded profile with a natural ability for collection. Long, flowing manes and tails, a deep barrel and substantial bone contribute to the picture of strength and nobility.

Pura Raza Española (PRE) horses originate from Spain. They are among the oldest horse breeds in Europe. These popular horses are closely related to Berber horses. In the past, like many other breeds, this breed was refined by crossbreeding with Arabian and English thoroughbreds.

In Andalusia, where most of the Pure Spanish Horses are bred, the Pura Raza Española horse predominates. It is the heir of the Cartujano horse, which attracted the admiration of Kings and became the preferred mount of Royalty and the Cavalry.

With the splitting of the continents, these aboriginal horses evolved into two separate breeds with a common ancestry and evolutionary factors, the Barb and the Spanish horse. Both breeds are strong, close coupled and agile, able to thrive in such varied terrain as high, rough mountain slopes and lowland, marshy belts around the coastal deltas.
