Polka Dot Door is a Canadian children's television series which was produced by the Ontario Educational Communications Authority (later known as TVOntario) from 1971 to 1993. The series features two hosts who speak directly to the home viewing audience. The content of the shows was generally geared towards education and creativity.

Polkaroo's Birthday is one of the two one-hour specials of The Polka Dot Door. This is the first episode of Polka Dot Door to be one-hour long. A typical episode of Polka Dot Door is 28 minutes and 50 seconds long. This is the only episode where the Polka Dot Door pets that appeared every Animal Day appeared with Polkaroo.

Polkaroo had far more polka dots on his muumuu compared to later designs. In the early 70s, Polkaroo was a darker shade of green, and had the third-darkest skin color of the Candoroos behind Rainbowroo and Signaroo.
