Picotron is a Fantasy Workstation: a self-contained creative environment built for imaginary hardware. Create and share cute Lua apps that can run on the Picotron desktop, be shared as cartridge files, or exported as stand-alone HTML and binary distributables.

Picotron has its own particular sound format: the PFX6416 is a synthesizer that aims to be lightweight enough to play in realtime on the web and have tiny synth definitions that can sit comfortably in a 256k cartridge.

Picotron uses a slightly extended version of Lua 5.4, and most of the standard Lua libraries are available. For more details, or to find out about Lua, see www.lua.org. The following is a primer for getting started with Lua syntax.

2025年2月14日 · The Picotron palette was quite chaotic and the numbering wasn't very intuitive to me (probably due to being backwards compatible with PICO-8). I thought it might be nice to have an easy reference within reach so I don't need to open a forum post or wiki page whenever I need to work with colors.

2024年3月30日 · To create your own mods containing new card games or card backs, you should start with the [ example project cart ]. or load it in picotron with #pss_example_project. Currently the bbs doesn't support fetching carts (I thought, but it seems fine right now??), but will eventually get a protocol to allow it.

picotron doesn’t take away from any of these, rather it creates its own environment with new ideas, and the constraints that are increased or removed will create their own problems, as we’ll all discover soon :)
