Petra (Arabic: ٱلْبَتْراء, romanized: Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα, "Rock"), originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu (Nabataean: 𐢛𐢚𐢒 ‎ or 𐢛𐢚𐢓𐢈 ‎, * Raqēmō), [3][4] is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan.

Petra Archaeological Park (PAP), covering an area of 264 dunums (264,000 square meters) within Wadi Musa, is considered a touristic and archaeological site, as well as a World Heritage Site registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1985.

In 300 B.C., Nabataean invaders captured the city of Petra, which had been the capital of the Edomite Kingdom, securing their hold on the region. From Petra, the Nabataeans controlled East-West trade routes between the Mediterranean Sea and Arabia, Syria, and Egypt.
