Percolation is a relatively recently invented method of extracting essential oils from plants. It can be described as resembling distillation, with the difference that the steam is produced in a steam generator above the plant material, and percolates down­wards through this.

Percolation is more efficient than maceration because it is a continuous process in which the saturated solvent is constantly being replaced by fresh solvent. Zhang et al. compared the percolation and refluxing extraction methods to extract Undaria pinnatifida .
