Biography. Patricia Polacco grew up hearing family stories from her Ukrainian grandmother. In the absence of a television set, Polacco’s “Babushka” told gripping tales in front of the crackling fireplace. In keeping with oral tradition, Polacco retold these stories to her own children.

Patricia was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1944. She lived on a farm with her mom and Grandparents until 1949 when her Babushka (grandmother) died. Polacco often says that living on the farm with her family was the most magical time of her life.
