The extra fluid causes your bursa to swell and puts pressure on other parts of your knee. You can usually “see” prepatellar bursitis because the front of your knee will look swollen.

In fact, prepatellar bursitis is sometimes called “carpet layer’s knee” and “housemaid’s knee.” However, it can also be caused by an infection, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or gout. Pes anserine bursitis is commonly seen in conjunction with knee arthritis.
