The “OVERPACK” marking is not required when the required markings representative of each package type contained in the overpack are visible from outside of the overpack. The lettering on the “OVERPACK” marking must be at least 12 mm (0.5 inches) high.

This unit, in the field of dangerous goods, takes the name of Overpack, in English, and must be reported in accordance with the Regulations. Specifically, these units must be labeled with Overpack labels and all other labels and marks for dangerous goods associated with the goods enclosed inside.

2020年9月4日 · US DOT’s Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) define an overpack as “an enclosure that is used by a single consignor to provide protection or convenience in the handling of a package or to consolidate two or more packages” [49 CFR 171.8].

Importantly, dangerous goods packages contained in the overpack must be properly packed, marked, labeled and in proper condition as required by the regulations – in other words, capable of being shipped individually even though they are enclosed.

If the dangerous goods marks are not visible through the overpack, the primary class label and each subsidiary class label for each of the dangerous goods, as well as the shipping name and UN number, must be displayed on the overpack.
