If you look at some of the bigger Open-Hardware projects out there, a lot of them have been done in KiCAD (See some here. Some are done in Altium (Novena, iMX6 Rex). KiCAD’s development appears to be trying to add a lot of higher-end features (3D visualization, signal integrity, etc.).

Looking for recommendations for 2D (or 3D) electric field mapping software. I want to be able to populate a series of electrodes in a plane and understand the equipotentials present when these electrodes are driven to different voltages. Would like to model virtually first before realizing the design in a PCB/PWB to reduce cycle time.

It is not open source, but there is a free non-commercial license availlaible. It is limited in PCB production (2 Layers, 10x16cm) and can handle only one schematic sheet. I like it a lot. A good open source alternative is Kicad. But I have not used it often enough to give good advice.
