First Class was offered on all narrowbody aircraft, as well as CRJ-900 Northwest Airlink flights operated by Mesaba Airlines and E175 flights operated by Compass Airlines. Seats ranged from 19.5 to 21.5 inches wide, and had between 34 and 37 inches of pitch.

Douglas’ DC-10 offered the step in capacity (40 First Class + 196 Economy Class seats, plus containerized cargo) between the 727 and 747 that Northwest wanted for routes such as Seattle-Spokane-Minneapolis-Chicago-Atlanta-Miami but also the legs to run Seattle-Tokyo if needed.

NWA’s first revenue flight took off June 22, 1970, from Minneapolis / St. Paul to New York JFK. All ten frames of the first order were delivered in 1970-71, and Northwest topped up its order with five more 747-100B longer-range variants to be delivered in 1971.
