The noisy pitta (Pitta versicolor) is a species of bird in the family Pittidae. The noisy pitta is found in eastern Australia and southern New Guinea. It eats earthworms, insects and snails. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. [3]

Sometimes calls from high in the canopy. A distinctive bird with a chestnut crown. This species has green and black wings, dull yellow underparts, a black facial stripe, a bright blue shoulder patch, and a red patch under the tail. A very colorful species, it can although be inconspicuous while it hops around foraging on forest floors.

The adult Noisy Pitta has a mostly black head and neck but the crown of its head is chestnut brown with a central black stripe. Its upper parts are mostly dark green but it has bright blue shoulder patches. Its underbody is mustard-yellow with a dark area towards the rear but a red patch right at the rear underside.

We first spotted a Noisy Pitta, race "versicolor", at Dorrigo NP, northern NSW, in January 2011. The solitary bird seen by us, contrary to its name, was entirely silent. They were found by us in the same location again in August 2015.

For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern. The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be rare in New South Wales and locally moderately common in Queensland (Lambert and Woodcock 1996).

The Noisy Pitta bounces around on the rainforest floor looking for leeches and snails to eat. It has a creamy breast but bright orange belly, a black mask with chocolate brown cap and, when it flies, brilliant turquoise on its wings and tail and sudden white wing spots.
