The New York Central Hudson was a popular 4-6-4 "Hudson" type steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), Baldwin Locomotive Works [1] and the Lima Locomotive Works in three series from 1927 to 1938 for the New York Central Railroad.

These engines, built for the New York Central subsidiary by Alco-Schenectady (1st 10) and Lima (last 10), were virtually identical to the NYC J-series Hudsons. Boiler had Coffin feedwater heater, valve motion limited cutoff of 14" (356 mm) piston valves.

As the top passenger power of one of the most passenger-oriented railroads from the late 1920s to the early 1950s, the J-1, J-2, and J-3 classes were in the public eye like few other groups of engines.

The J1e Hudson was the basis for model train manufacturer Lionel's Famed 700e Hudson, produced between 1937 and 1939. The same locomotive would later be used as the basis for the semi-scale 763 Hudson, and later the postwar 773, which was produced from 1950 and 1966.

A Hudson type 4075 horsepower passenger locomotive with 79" drivers, class J le #5344 was just being outshopped, so this was picked for the streamline project.

The J-1e group of ten locomotives, eventually numbered 5395-5404, were the last J-1 4-6-4s to be delivered to the New York Central System, coming from the American Locomotive Company in 1931. In videos or other media one occasionally finds one of the last five J-1e locomotives referred to as a J-3, but the J-3 class began with No. 5405.
