2021年2月23日 · Nenagh Castle is a stunning 13 th-century castle that is nestled in the heart of Nenagh town in County Tipperary. The tall castle tower overlooks the bustling town of Nenagh while also offering spectacular views of the nearby Tipperary countryside.

Nenagh Castle was built c. 1216 and was the main castle of the Butler family before they moved to Gowran, County Kilkenny in the 14th century. The family later purchased Kilkenny Castle, which was to be the main seat of their power for the next 500 years. [6]

Located centrally at the top end of Nenagh, the castle is basically a partially restored round tower with access to the upper levels via the original winding stairs built into the thickness of the outer walls.

The existing 100ft high x 55 ft external diameter tower remaining, today known as Nenagh Castle or locally “Nenagh Round,” used to be attached to a curtain wall which surrounded a five-sided courtyard.

Nenagh Castle is a great example of a medieval building from the 13th century, with a stone spiral staircase all the way to the top. There are 101 steps in all. Access to the tower is through a passageway within the base of the wall.
