History of NATO. NATO was born in 1949 with the North Atlantic Treaty, where 12 countries came together and agreed to the conditions for non-aggression and cooperation. This military alliance expanded by 18 countries over time. As of April 2023, the NATO consists of 31 countries (29 from Europe and 2 from North America).

In 1999, NATO's first-ever combat operation occurred through the air strikes on Yugoslavia in order to end Serbia's ethnic cleansing against Albanian separatists within Kosovo [9].
