The National Museum of Finland contains the oldest and most comprehensive cultural history collections in Finland with approximately half a million objects. The artefacts illustrate Finnish history, folk culture and the culture of Finno-Ugric peoples as well as world cultures from various parts of the world.

The task of the National Museum of Finland is to provide a sounding board for our culture and the changes it goes through. The museum’s collections, locations, programmes and activities inspire understand time, life and humanity.

The National Museum building was designed by the Finnish architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. They won the architectural competition for the project in 1902, and the building work was conducted mainly between 1905 and 1910. The museum was opened to the public in 1916.

Finland’s recent past includes both light and shadows. The Story of Finland exhibition shows how a small autonomous Grand Duchy of Russia became the welfare state of Finland. Eight themes take the story forward from the early stages of the state through the wars to democracy and the welfare state as well as the deep recession of the 1990s.

Objects belonging in the historical collections are on display at the National Museum, in addition to the manor house museums of Louhisaari, Alikartano and Urajärvi, as well as the Urho Kekkonen Museum in Tamminiemi, to name a few.
