The Senior Retreat, sponsored by the NFB Seniors Division, focuses on promoting a sense of wellbeing and self-confidence despite living with newly acquired vision loss, and/or lifelong blindness.

It was in 1952 that Jernigan was first elected to the NFB Board of Directors. In 1953 he was appointed to the faculty of the California Orientation Center for the Blind in Oakland, where he played a major role in developing the best program of its kind then in existence.
