So the i switched back to mig to carry on with the current project, i didnt touch any of the mig settings. Now im getting allot of black soot around the outside of the welds.

If you think wind is a pain for mig welding steel try Alu Gust of wind and watch the wire shoot right through the Alu you are welding Often my work is on the slipway and that means I am often 10m or more above the seawall so really exposed.

I never disconnect anything; I just am very careful where the return lead is placed. Those big bolts on the tranny might be convenient, but they are not the place to place the return lead when welding on the frame, body or exhaust.
