Merewether (/ ˈ m ɛ r ɪ ˌ w ɛ ð ər /) is a former Municipality and today a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 3 km (2 mi) from Newcastle's central business district with a population of around 11,000. [2] The suburb stretches 3 km (2 mi) from Merewether Beach in the east to Adamstown in the west.

The first ocean baths at Merewether were built in 1926, partly in reaction to the sewerage coming from the gulf. In 1928 construction work on the existing baths was begun. The remains of the first small baths are still used slightly to the north.

The iconic Merewether Beach is home to the international surfing competition, Surfest. It is part of a beach reserve that stretches from Dixon Park in the north to Burwood Beach in the south - with superb views in all directions.

Merewether is the most populated suburb of Newcastle and is home to beautiful Merewether Beach. The first ocean baths at Merewether were built in 1926 and the remains of the first small baths are still used today.

There is a wide expanse of fine white sand, nice little rock pools to explore and two large ocean baths for swimming, as well as a pavilion, surf club and other eateries nearby. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards all year round and in swimming season from 7am to 5:30pm.

4 天之前 · The iconic Merewether Beach is a favourite surf spot for locals and is a National Surfing Reserve. When the ocean conditions are unsafe for a swim its proximity to Merewether Ocean Baths means you can still get your saltwater fix.

Established in 2002, Merewether Historical Society is aimed at recording memories of the past for the benefit of future generations. We aim to promote and encourage research in the history of the Merewether area and the AA Company.

Merewether High School (abbreviated as MHS) is a government-funded co-educational academically selective secondary day school, located in the suburb of Broadmeadow in the city of Newcastle, Australia. It was established in 1977 following the merger of Newcastle Technical High School and Cooks Hill Girls High School.
