Jul 15, 2006 · The ML uses the older generation 3 valve per cyl 5.0L 305hp engine. The GL is smaller in displacement at 4.6L but uses a 4 valve per cyl head and 335hp. My wife's '05 S500 has the old 5.0L and our new GL has the new 4.6L. The 4.6L is a quite a bit snappier, pulls hard and is silky smooth like a V6.

May 31, 2011 · I have both, an ML & GL Diesel but have only towed with the ML. the ML has a more sportier feel. The ride will not be as smooth as the GL, but in no way is it a rough ride. In the ML, I towed a 5000# trailer which was wider than the ML ~220 miles and it handled it like a champ. The mpg was approximately 16-17 mpg, if i recall correctly.
