Mehmed V (born Nov. 2, 1844, Constantinople—died July 3, 1918, Constantinople) was an Ottoman sultan from 1909 to 1918, whose reign was marked by the absolute rule of the Committee of Union and Progress and by Turkey’s defeat in World War I.

Mehmed V was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 to 1918. However, he was ruler in name only. During his reign the empire was actually controlled by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), an organization of the Young Turk movement. Mehmed V was born on November 2, 1844, in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey.

He ascended the throne after the 31 March Incident. He had succeeded his half-brother Abdul Hamid II and was later succeeded by his half-brother Mehmed VI.

Mehmed V Reshad (Ottoman Turkish: محمد خامس Meḥmed-i ẖâmis, Turkish language: Mehmed V Reşad or Reşat Mehmet) (2 November 1844 – 3 July 1918) was the 35th Ottoman Sultan. He was the son of Sultan Abdülmecid I.[2] He was succeeded by his half-brother Mehmed VI.

Mehmed V. died on 3 July 1918 at the age of 73, only four months before the end of World War One in surrender of the Central Powers, and hence, did not live to see the downfall of the Ottomon Empire. He spent most of his life at the Dolmabahce Palace and Yidiz Palace in Istanbul.
