Well, I got hubby to drive the van on the highway today. He had only driven it around town. He agreed that the dealer is full of it and the shaking is not acceptable. The negative is that it is a VAN, 2nd row seats don't slide backwards or forwards and the only colors available are green, white and silver. If anyone has any advice on the ES, I have a really LONG post in the "prices paid" section and would appreciate the help. As for the Mazda 5, there aren't very many here in Hawaii.

2002 MPV with 47,000 miles - transmission just went out on the PA Turnpike yesterday. The transmission was jumping when going up steep hills and ultimately it failed completely. Like someone else on this thread, I was lucky just to get the van to the side of the road without getting killed. My van is now waiting outside a Mazda Service Center ...

The next van in the stable was a '99 Quest and it was a good size (although a wee bit bigger than the first generation Villager/Quest). Last year the Quest started costing too much (had a bit over 200k on it), so got an '09 Grand Caravan.

The Mazda extended warranty people refuse to pay for it! Mazda put out a service bulletin a few years ago saying that the Transmission Range Switch causes a lot of problems, and Mazda has redesigned it, and if a customer complains about transmission problems, it's probably this part.
