Mayflies (also known as shadflies or fishflies in Canada and the upper Midwestern United States, as Canadian soldiers in the American Great Lakes region, [2] and as up-winged flies in the United Kingdom) are aquatic insects belonging to the order Ephemeroptera.

2024年5月19日 · Mayflies are the only insects that molt in winged condition. There may be from several to dozens nymphal instars. Mature nymphs swim to water surface or crawl onto rocks or plants, then molt into winged subimagoes which then molt again into adults (imagoes). Adult lifespan ranges from 1.5 hours to two weeks, most adults live 48‒72 hrs.

 Very Rare mayflies, the only specimen collected from sandy coastal plain rivers.  Dolania is the only genus and it’s very easy to recognize by the dense spines on the head and protonotum.  This family is also represented in the US by a single species – Potamanthus (8 species).

This key should cover nearly all of the mayfly genera that fly fishers encounter on trout streams east of the Great Plains. Species identifications are not covered, although they are mentioned. This is called a "dichotomous key."

There are also mayflies in Central America and Oceania. Oceania is a fantastic region with thousands of islands throughout the Central and South Pacific Oceans.

All Hawaiian species have been introduced and currently are presumedly extirpated from the islands. This list has been compiled and is maintained by Mayfly Central, Purdue University.

There are over 3,000 living species of mayfly, in over 400 genera in 42 families. At mating the female lays her eggs in the water. [2] . They settle to the bottom where they stick to rocks, vegetation or the bottom of the stream. They range in size by the particular species of Mayfly.
