Matthew Charles McDermott (born November 22, 1977) is an American lawyer who has served an associate justice of the Iowa Supreme Court since 2020. [1] In 2024, he wrote the majority ruling on the Iowa Supreme Court that implemented a six-week abortion ban. [2]

Justice McDermott was appointed to the Supreme Court in April 2020. Justice McDermott was born and raised in Carroll, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 2000. He received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2003, where he served as an editor of the California Law Review.
