The Maasai people originated from the lower Nile valley north of Lake Turkana (Northwest Kenya) and began migrating south around the 15th century, arriving in a long trunk of land stretching from what is now northern Kenya to what is now central Tanzania between the 17th and late 18th century. They migrated southwards searching for better grazing and agricultural lands, a quest which eventually took them into central East Africa around 1750 CE. The Great Migration is the largest overland migration in the world, with wildlife travelling a total of 800 km or more during each cycle. The migration occurs within an area that is known as the “Serengeti ecosystem”.
