As an addendum, perusing the list, I wish they'd gotten the Macross Plus 4-part OVA along with or in lieu of the Movie, as I've always liked the pacing and the narrative differences in the OVA over the movie. Both are great (Macross Plus is my favorite of the entire series, essentially my gateway into the larger world of anime in the mid-90s).

If you want to watch all of Macross that's probably the most sensible way of doing it. On the other hand, Macross is much less continuity -heavy than the likes of Gundam or Yamato, so don't worry about it too much.

For the "Macross" portion of it, the story is mostly unchanged, only starting to deviate towards the end to set up the next part of the story. That being said, it should be treated as its own thing. If your goal is to get into Macross and continue on with other Macross shows as well, stick with Macross and don't watch Robotech. Or watch both.
