2025年2月28日 · There is more than one DRG system being used in the United States, but only the MS-DRG (CMS-DRG) system is used by Medicare. A variety of other payers have adapted elements of the MS-DRG system including some Medicaid programs, workers compensation, and even some private payers.

Medical MS-DRGs are assigned based upon the principal diagnosis, as in this example from MDC 04 Diseases & Disorders of the Respiratory System. They are further refined based on the presence or absence of MCCs and/or CCs. MCCs are higher weighted – e.g. more resource intensive than CCs.

Within each MDC, the MS-DRGs are listed in the order in which the grouper recognizes them. This enables users to see instances where grouper logic order differs from strict numerical order. Procedure codes that are listed with an * indicate that they are non-operating room procedures.
