Lake Benmore is New Zealand’s largest artificial lake, created by the Benmore Hydro-Dam. It is about 74km² and holds about 1.25 billion cubic meters of water – that’s 1.5 times the water in Wellington Harbour!

Located just 5 minutes from Omarama, Lake Benmore Holiday Park offers a quiet, tree sheltered camp opposite the top of Lake Benmore and Ahuriri River (great fishing and boating!) Lake Benmore is Canterbury’s most popular recreational lake – perhaps not as spectacular as Lake Pukaki or as beautiful as Lake Sumner, but easily accessible, with wonderful scenery, good weather, great fishing, heaps of space, and some very fine water for sailing.

A special treat for travellers and families, this beautiful campsite amongst the trees and across the road from the lake was a pleasure to visit. With only 15 campsites available, within a fairly roomy grassed area, you may need to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
