Deciding to put their skill sets and talents to work on behalf of area students, Sarah and Kura launched the Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF), designed primarily to help girls stay in school. They began distributing washable, reusable sanitary pads, underwear and soap packaged as Opportunity Kits.

KDEF not only funded the drilling of one of the deepest boreholes in the country but installed solar panels, storage tanks and automatic water dispensers. Women and children are now free and no longer required to walk far distances to find water sources.

Because groundwater is scarce and often contaminated, KDEF works with communities to find sustainable solutions. We built rain-harvesting rock catchments, masonry storage tanks, and solar-powered boreholes.

High School Scholarship — Kenya Drylands Education Fund
KDEF provides promising secondary school students from vulnerable families in Northern Kenya with the resources they need to complete four years of study in high quality boarding schools, without distractions or want for food, clothing, school and personal supplies and safe housing.
