Her first same-sex romantic relationship was with Maata Mahupuku (sometimes known as Martha Grace), a wealthy young Māori woman whom she had first met at Miss Swainson's school in Wellington and again in London in 1906.

Her journals and letters evoke a passionate individual, dedicated to her craft, whose life was tragically cut short by tuberculosis on 9 January 1923, aged 34. She is buried in the Cimetière d'Avon in France.

Although her personal life was filled with illness and depression, Mansfield proved herself to be one of her time period's most creative writers, as she was even compared to the likes of Virginia Woolf. The bitter depiction of marital and family relationships of her middle-class characters in her short stories was said to be ahead of her time.
